Exploring Soft Pastels

Soft Pastel is one of the most versatile painting mediums. This program guides the participants through the many possibilities of painting with this near-pure pigment. Tailored to those in the small class, we will explore different substrates (papers), brands and types of soft pastel, mark-making possibilities, color theory, expressive textures and creative approaches. If you’ve been playing with the medium for a while or just very curious and want to discover what the excitement is about, this flexible class would be great for you. Because there are so many options in supplies, participants will receive a list for “getting started” … but if you already have some supplies, just bring those to the class and we will continue on.

This 10 hour (4 weeks, 2.5 hours each) class was created to introduce and expand knowledge of soft pastels while sharing a variety of color theories & approaches.  Teacher Terrilynn will encourage self-expression and the joy of painting through instruction and demonstration with exercises for expanding color understanding and a variety of painting challenges for students

Terrilynn Barden Dubreuil has over 35 years of experience teaching all levels of art from basic drawing and color theory, to pastel, watercolor, and other media. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and has taken several master-level courses in a variety of media. Terrilynn has a passion for traveling the world and creating original art, especially pastel paintings, but also watercolor, oil, photography, and clay.
